When you hear of a restaurant that?s been around for over 35 years, you have to think that they are doing something right. After dining at Huggo?s, you?ll realize that they are not only doing something right, they are doing everything perfectly. Sitting right alongside the ocean and over the bay in rustic Kailua-Kona town, the restaurant serves your dishes with a picture perfect sunset as your companion. Cool tropical breezes wrap around you as they travel through the eatery?s open-air environs. The interior is casual and exemplifies the relaxing beach setting. While the view is breathtaking, it is the menu that draws the most attention. Here, the chef chooses products from local farmers to assure freshness and flavor. The preparations are done in creative Pacific Rim and Mediterranean styles to compliment the natural flavors of the meat, poultry and fresh island fish. Dishes such as the Crab Crusted Ono, Teriyaki Steak and Macadamia Nut Mahi Mahi are perennial favorites. Wi

Huggo's has one thing going for it -- and one thing only: its commanding view of the bay and (unless one of those godawful, Titanic-size cruise ships is parked just off shore) of Kona's famous sunsets. Other than that, there is absolutely no reason to go here. The service is fairly dreadful when it's not just plain amateurish and clueless. The drinks are hugely overpriced the way all the drinks are overpriced along Ali'i Drive, with the difference that Huggo's significantly underpours. (I don't know why the liquor inspector hasn't yanked their license for failing to pour full shots.) Their invented ?tropical? drinks are fairly disgusting even for the genre. We went on two nights, hoping for a decent sunset, and found the "Hawaiian" music on both nights to be just shy of pathetic. It's your basic tourist trap and they don't care whether you like it or not -- they know you're probably not going to be there long.

The food and the view were great and it was a very romantic dinner. However, had it not been our honeymoon we never would have splurged.

This is a wonderful place for a romantic meal. We sat at the rail at sunset and watched the colors of the sky change as waves crashed on the rocks below. Service was prompt and friendly. The king crab was tasty but hard to extract (they didn't have the tools, and it got messy), so next time I'd order something else--but I would definitely go back. The chardonnay was one of the nicest I've had, and the bread and basil butter was a nice twist on basic fare. The mac nut pie? To die for.

My husband and I had a wonderful romantic dinner at Huggo's. The people are all so friendly and the food is great and this all comes with a stunning view of the ocean. On The Rocks right next to the restaurant provides delightful music too.
